Abstract

Abstract: The recovery of a new species of small creodont from the Early Miocene of coastal Namibia including associated upper and lower dental elements reveals that the group is in need of revision. Previously, East African samples assigned to Metapterodon consisted only of maxillae while Isohyaenodon was only represented by lower jaws. It is now clear that the East African Metapterodon specimens represent the upper jaws of Isohyaenodon, while the Namibian material belongs to a separate genus Metapterodon which seems to be absent from East Africa.
